Legal Aid

We know that there can be no real Peace without Justice.

Yet, sadly, the world experiences ongoing violence and wars. Peace is illusive. And what is absolutely clear that the weaker segments of society are the ones who suffer the most. Their powerlessness makes them the most vulnerable to human greed and injustice.

North East India has been a conflict zone for centuries. Intra and inter tribal fights gradually evolved into ethnic cleansing efforts by many of the dominant groups. The cessionist movements in the states of Nagaland and Mizoram which lasted for decades were violent.

The Purvanchal Pragati Samaj is committed to standing up for Human Rights and helping others, especially those who suffer injustices, ensuring that they have access to what is rightfully theirs - most of all, a dignified existence with the respect that is due to them as human beings.

The Legal Cell for Human Rights (LCHR) is a Purvanchal Pragati sponsored centre in Guwahati that serves marginalized groups and individuals.

The goal of the LCHR is to protect, promote, and defend human rights and civil liberties, especially the poor, weak, and vulnerable sections of society. It seeks to enforce human dignity and freedom as guaranteed by the Constitution of India and various UN declarations, charters, and conventions.

The ongoing activities of the LCHR include the following:

  1. Providing guidance, counseling, and consultancy services

  2. Representing aggrieved persons or groups in courts of law

  3. Spreading awareness about human rights

  4. Promoting legal literacy and knowledge

  5. Advocacy and lobbying for social causes

  6. Training para-legal workers

  7. Published leaflets and books, handouts, and other materials

  8. Legal education for school and college student
